The Barack Obama campaign volunteers in Pinellas County were overjoyed by the fact that their hard work for the presidential run paid off.
When the election was called in favor of President Barack Obama, the celebration started at the campaign office in St. Petersburg. "We won Pinellas County and we won the entire country. It's just amazing," said Mallory Stewart Robison, an Obama campaign volunteer. Obama's re-election didn't come as a given for any of the campaign workers, who put in months of hard work promoting Obama's mission, Stewart Robison said. "I've been (at the campaign office) so much, and it's hard to believe that it's actually over," Steward Robison said. NBC News called the presidential election for Obama around 11:15 EST. Florida votes were still too close to call Tuesday night, but Obama won the majority of votes in Pinellas County.
The referendum to dissolve the St. Pete Beach Police and replace it with the Pinellas County Sheriff's Office has passed.
The Pinellas County Sheriff's Office will be adding St. Pete Beach into its jurisdiction. The referendum to replace the St. Pete Beach Police with the Pinellas County Sheriff has passed. The plan is scheduled to bring 14 sheriff's deputies, one community officer, one detective and five sergeants in as sworn officers working on St. Pete Beach. St. Pete Beach Police officers and support staff would be offered positions at the sheriff's office, but they would not be stationed at St. Pete Beach from the get-go. First, they would have to undergo field training and spend time acclimating into the sheriff's office. Officers who switch to the sheriff's office would be brought in at their current pay. Ross Carnovale, a criminal justice student in St. Pete Beach, believes the move to the Pinellas County Sheriff is the best move in the long run.
Whether to keep St. Pete Beach Police or bring in the Pinellas County Sheriff as a replacement is one of the hot issues on the ballot today in St. Pete Beach. Ross Carnovale, a criminal justice student, believes that the move to the Sheriff's Office would be work out the best for everyone involved. "I'm a little hesitant to lose St. Pete Beach Police, but then again, I think the sheriff in the long run will be the future for us," Carnovale said. Carnovale also shared his viewpoints on the presidential election and how Florida will be playing a key role. "We have a lot of left and a lot of right in the state of Florida," Carnovale said. Employees of the St. Pete Beach Police are campaigning for people to vote yes on dissolving the police force and transferring it to the Pinellas County Sheriff's Office.
Outside the St. Pete Beach polling location at 7701 Boca Ciega Dr., employees of the St. Pete Beach Police were campaigning Tuesday about the charter referendum that would dissolve the police force and replace it with the Pinellas County Sheriff. Molly Taft, the St. Pete Beach Police records supervisor, and she and other employees are out to encourage people to vote in the Sheriff's Office. "We want people to know it's OK to vote us out," Taft said. Nick Maranzana, a student at Stetson University, put in his vote today at Treasure Island and had some personal backing behind it. "I have connections with the coal industry," Maranzana said. This year's election is a bigger year for Maranzana because of current issues that his family is facing in the coal industry.
