Edward Moran, who served as Belleair commissioner and mayor, has died at the age of 90. Moran was best known for drawing a line in the sand against high rise condos filling the Belleair beaches, according to the Tampa Bay Times. In addition to serving two serving on the Belleair Town Commission from 1978 to 1986, he led Concerned Citizens for Belleair. Moran famously in Belleair spearheaded opposition to twin 16-story condominium towers, the Tampa Bay Times reports. Moran also was mayor for two terms, then step aside, declining to run again. Deputy Dan DiCicco – a SWAT team member, graduate student and former high school football player – pursued life to the fullest, after a diagnosis of cancer in his teens.
Deputy Dan DiCicco is being recalled for inner strength and perseverance to reach his goals, despite a diagnosis of Hodgkin's disease in high school. DiCicco died Sunday, April 14, at the age of 29. The funeral service for DiCicco will be Monday at First Baptist Church in St. Petersburg. According to an article in the Tampa Bay Times, he passed away at Northside Hospital two days after collapsing in a parking lot. Friends and family are recalling the deputy as a man who worked hard to achieve and never gave up. DiCicco was a standout player and captain of his football team at Dixie Hollins High, when he was diagnosed with Hodgkin's disease. Known for his film scripts for 'Hulk' and 'The Fanatstic Four,' Michael France has died from complications related to diabetes.
Michael France, who was a superhero to fans of Marvel superhero films, has died, the Tampa Bay Times reports. The 51-year-old screenwriter penned film stories for Ang Lee's "Hulk" and "The Fantastic Four." His sister, Suzanne France, confirmed that he died Friday at his St. Pete Beach home. Michael France suffered from complications related to his diabetes, Suzanne told the Tampa Bay Times. France's screen credits also include: Renny Harlin's "Cliffhanger," which he co-wrote, and the 1995 Bond movie, "GoldenEye." In 2007, he bought the historic Beach Theatre in St. Pete Beach, where he showed classic movies. But attendance was not what he anticipated, and France shut down the theater in 2012. From 1979 to 1994 James R. "Dick" Feimster served as mayor of Redington Shores. On March 24, Feimster died from complications of Alzheimer's disease, according to a report from theTampa Bay Times. The family is planning a celebration of his life at 1 p.m. April 28 at Redington Shores' Constitution Park — a park he helped to develop while he was mayor. In lieu of flowers, the family is asking that donations be sent to the Dick Feimster Memorial Fund at Ivy Ridge Memory Care, 7179 40th Ave. N, St. Petersburg 33709. Gen. H. Norman Schwarzkopf had retired to Tampa, Fla., after a final military assignment leading U.S. Central Command.
Retired Gen. H. Norman Schwarzkopf, 78, passed away today in Tampa, according to media reports. Schwarzkopf was best known to the American people for his leadership in removing Saddam Hussein and his forces from Kuwait in 1991. Schwarzkopf had successfully led an international coalition of U.S. allies to drive out Iraqi troops. "Barbara and I mourn the loss of a true American patriot and one of the great military leaders of his generation," former President George H.W. Bush said in a written statement, according to ABC News. Schwarzkopf led what came to be known as Operation Desert Storm under President Bush. Vietnam veteran Ray Smith learned about his son's Sept. 11 death on TV. Finally, he is able to say goodbye.
Ray Smith wrapped his arms around a plaque and a photo of his son on a wall at the Bay Pines VA Medical Center. "Welcome home, son," he said, as close friends watched and fought back tears in a small counseling room at the center in St. Petersburg, FL. Smith saluted his son, while friends opened their arms to embrace a father who lost a son. Smith, who lives in Gulfport, is a Vietnam veteran and father of one of the men killed during an attack on the U.S. consulate in Benghazi, Libya. “He was butchered, he was murdered. War veteran Ray Smith of Gulfport will attend a public ceremony at noon today at the Bay Pines VA Medical Center to honor his son, Sean Smith, who will killed on Sept. 11 during an attack on the U.S. consluate in Benghazi, Libya. A public memorial service for Bill "Woo" Correira will be Saturday, Dec. 1, at First Baptist Church of St. Petersburg. The service is at 1 p.m., at 1900 Gandy Blvd., St. Petersburg. All are welcome to attend. Correira is a St. Petersburg artist who died Monday at his Central Avenue gallery. Correira was known for painting colorful images of marine life. He also had a high profile in St. Petersburg, beloved for his openness and generosity toward others. Beloved St. Pete artist Bill "Woo" Correira died inside his art gallery on Central Avenue Monday. He had been battling brain cancer.
Local artist Bill "Woo" Correira knew better than to worry about what people thought or if things did not go exactly as planned. Why should he? After surviving a brush with death in 2007, the artist gained an appreciation for living in the moment and fully engaging in his work as a painter. In 2007, on Thanksgiving Day, Correira was diagnosed with brain cancer and languished for 49 days in a coma. But he survived, and later realized his dream of owning a St. Petersburg gallery, where he focused on painting marine animals. On Monday night, Correira died inside his art gallery at 689 Central Ave. in St. Petersburg.
