More than 300 volunteers help with a wide variety of tasks at Fort De Soto. The county's largest park has 1,136 acres across five interconnected islands. Fort De Soto was named America's Top Beach for 2009 by Trip Advisor.

Brian Fairbank and Karl Cummings are two regular volunteers. The pair decided to help at Fort De Soto after visiting the park with a friend who was also a park volunteer, according to a blog on Patch.

“We really didn’t know what to expect when we first came out here,” Fairbank said. “We thought maybe picking up trash or doing little odd jobs.”

Fairbank and Cummings, who both retired from Verizon, have helped at Fort D Soto with a wide variety of tasks from sewer and electrical maintenance to modifying trash can structures, according to the blog.
