Why Did an Alligator Go to Fort De Soto Beach?

An alligator was 'rescued' in the surf off Fort DeSoto Beach Friday by lifeguards.

A small alligator – under four feet in length – was spotted in the surf off Fort De Soto Beach Friday after lifeguards first mistook it for a log.

The wayward 'gator eventually was carried out of the saltwater and placed into the care of the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission.

Wildlife experts still aren't sure where the alligator came from – or why it was at the beach.

According to a story in the Tampa Bay Times, lifeguards first observed the small alligator swimming in the water.

FWC spokesman Gary Morse told the Tampa Bay Times that alligators will sometimes swim in saltwater in their journey to another body of freshwater. It's uncertain where this little guy was heading.
