Online learning is popular in Pinellas County, almost too popular, according to school district officials who have moved the deadline for students to apply for virtual classes up a week.

“In only four years we’ve reached the point where demand has surpassed capacity, similar to the situation with District Application Programs such as magnets and fundamentals,” said Director of Academic Computing Pat Lusher in an email to media. “We want to maintain the quality of the program by not placing more students in a classroom than existing resources can support, so we’re closing the application process a week early.”

That means beaches students who want to take part in Pinellas Virtual School need to get their applications in sooner rather than later. The deadline to apply is 5 p.m. Friday, Aug. 23, up a week from the previous date of Aug. 30.

Students who are interested in online learning, can apply for virtual classes and learn more about them on the district’s website. Classes are available for kids in kindergarten through the 12th grade.
