A 55-year-old Treasure Island man has been charged with battery on a police officer after he was resisting arrest at the Treasure Island Publix, 111 104th Ave.

David Combs has been charged by Treasure Island Police with battery on a law enforcement officer, resisting arrest and trespassing.

According to the arrest affidavit, a Publix employee on June 13 asked Combs to leave the store but he refused and tried to go back into the store.

Police said Sgt. Dan Morton asked Combs to leave several times and he refused the officer as well.

"Sgt. Morton went to arrest Combs and he resisted," the affidavit said. "Sgt. Morton had to physically move Combs and place him on a planter area to sit."

At that point, police said Combs fell backward and grabbed a handful of sand/dirt and threw it in the officer's face.

Morton pulled out his Taser and police said Combs then complied with instructions.
