The Loggerhead sea turtle is one of the iconic Tampa Bay animals. Unfortunately, the baby loggerheads that are so cared for on the beaches of Pinellas County could face trouble as they move more south.
More than 7,000 of the endangered Loggerhead turtles died from fishing accidents off the coast of Puerto Lopez Mateos in Mexico since 2006, according to a press release from the Oceanic Society, the Mexican Center for Environmental Rights and the Defenders of Wildlife.
The National Fisheries Institute has reported that off the coast, two turtles are accidentally killed each day per net.
In the U.S., Loggerhead turtles are classified as endangered and fishing fleets are required to cease fishing activities while Loggerheads are near.
