Silver Trout Abundant Along the Beaches

Silver trout continue to be an easy target for anglers.

Silver trout continue to be an easy target for anglers. Steve McGucken and family filled their cooler in the Weedon Island power plant channel. Tandem Love Lures and jig heads with a small piece of shrimp, fished along the bottom, provided nonstop action. The mouth of the Gandy Boat Ramp channel is also holding lots of silvers.

I fished on the south Skyway fishing pier this week with the “Fishing with Bill Miller” film crew. We had a fun day catching Spanish mackerel casting silver spoons. Bonita's were also attacking the spoons and giving lucky anglers the fight of their lives.

Anglers fishing fresh cut greenbacks on the bottom were catching big blue fish and silver trout. The day we were there, the deep end of the south pier was the hot spot and the fish bit best on the incoming tide.

Paul Bristow reports that the shark fishing at the Apollo Beach power plant is good. Bristow, who fishes from a kayak, said lots of black tips and some bulls are there. Fresh fish carcasses and other stinky cut bait have been getting the most shark action.

A few cobia were spotted and some pompano and big mackerel were also caught casting jigs in the warm water plume.

Sail fishing at Los Suenos, Costa Rica, is red hot according to Billy Caldwell. Caldwell and friends have been averaging 18-20 sails a day to the boat with many more hooked and lost. All of the fish are being caught on twenty pound mono main line, fifty pound fluorocarbon leaders and rigged ballyhoo and mullet with circle hooks. A few blue marling, up to three hundred pounds, have also been caught.

Tarpon Springs native Capt. Terry Stansil reports, via Facebook, that blue and black marlin and big tuna fishing in Tonga is outstanding with marlin to eight hundred pounds. Stansil and crew are exploring the South Pacific fishing following the path of famed angler and outdoor writer Zane Gray.
