Slow Down! Speed Limit Change Ahead for Redington Shores

The commission had planned to install "speed tables" to slow traffic on 175th Avenue East. But residents opposed that.

If you think the 25 mph speed limit is too slow in Redington Shores neighborhoods, you better buckle your seat belt for a new traffic law in town: The speed limit is dropping to 15 mph, with a "zero tolerance" enforcement.

"Zero tolerance" means no warning by a police officer, who will issue tickets to offenders.

Redington Shores commissioners said at a July 31 workshop that they've had enough with motorists speeding on residential streets, according to TBNWeekly.com.

Their solution is to lower the speed limit. They will vote on the change at the next commission meeting, which is on Sept. 10.

The commission had planned to install "speed tables" to slow traffic on 175th Avenue East. But residents opposed that. They also described drivers blowing through stop signs, honking at drivers going at 35 mph to speed up, and risks to the children in the neighborhood.

The most compelling testimony came from resident Mendy Jones, whose son was hit by a speeding car. She said that there are 11 school age kids just on one block on 175th Avenue East.
