Bayway, Cheesecake, 'Sharknado', 'Oh My'

Here are five things to know on the beaches today: Bayway closing, 'Sharknado', St. Pete Beach property taxes, rainy weather and national cheesecake day.

‘SHARKNADO’ ON BIG SCREEN

Heard the buzz about “Sharknado” but haven’t experienced it yet in all its ridiculous glory yet? Or just can’t wait for “Sharknado 2” to hit the SyFy channel next year? You’re in luck: The made-for-TV, so-bad-it’s-good, sci-fi extravaganza is coming to theaters for a one-night-only screening at midnight Friday, Aug. 2. Catch a nearby screening at  Citrus Park Stadium 20 (7999 Citrus Park Town Center Mall, Tampa), Park Place Stadium 16 (7200 U.S. 19 N, Pinellas Park) and Hollywood Stadium 20 (1993 Main St., Sarasota).

You might get wet today: the National Weather Service forecast is calling for a 50 percent chance of scattered thunderstorms during the day throughout much of the Tampa Bay area and a 20 percent chance of isolated thunderstorms in the evening. Highs are, of course, in the low 90s.

BAYWAY CLOSED

Wednesday, the eastbound portion of the Bayway Bridge will be closed for construction. The closure will last from 9 a.m. - 4 p.m. All traffic will be re-routed to Corey Avenue. Emergency vehicles will be allowed to pass through.

LOWERING PROPERTY TAXES

The St. Pete Beach city commission voted 3-2 last week to lower the millage rate in the city. Commissioners said when the public voted to allow the Pinellas County Sheriff's Office to take over the St. Pete Beach Police Department that they thought there would be a tax decrease.
