There was a slightly greater percerntage of eligible Hispanic voters – 62.2 percent – turning out to cast ballots in the 2012 presidential election in Florida than white, non-Hispanic voters. And more eligible female voters went to the polls than men. These results are among several demographic mesaurements released by the U.S. Census showing the make-up of voters in Florida and across the United States. One of five referendum questions on Tuesday's ballot ended in a tie vote.
Election officials will be holding a recount Friday morning after Treasure Island voters were split on a referendum dealing with downtown redevelopment in Tuesday's municipal election. Referendum question No. 3, which would allow density of up to 60 hotel or motel rooms per acre in the city's new downtown redevelopment district, ended in a dead heat. There were 762 votes in favor and 762 opposed, according to unofficial results from the Pinellas Supervisor of Elections. The Pinellas County Canvassing Board will meet at 9 a.m. Friday to conduct a recount and to certify the results, elections spokesperson Nancy Whitlock said. In just three days since Patch reported about a Florida secession petition, the petition grew from 1,343 to 30,304 signatures, exceeding its goal.
The Florida secession movement through an online petition has exploded over the course of three days, now surpassing its goal, reaching 30,304 signatures as of Wednesday evening. Patch first reported the Florida secession movement Monday when the petition on the White House's petition website had only 1,343 signatures and the story went viral to the point where 30,304 people have signed supporting the idea of secession, though it's not legally possible. The petition was created Nov. 10. Overall, 20 petitions for similar secession requests were filed on the site, and Texas even reached 60,000 signatures for its petition, The Huffington Post reported. Former Gov. Charlie Crist increasingly is blasting Gov. Rick Scott over how he is running the state of Florida.
The 2012 election is barely in the books and already Florida politicos are turning their eyes to 2014, especially Democrats hungry to take back the Governor's mansion from the Republicans. Increasingly, Democrats appear ready to embrace former Republican Gov. Charlie Crist as their best chance at winning in 2014. At the same time, Crist is taking a more vocal role in criticizing Gov. The Tampa Bay Times reports that President Barack Obama won the electoral vote in Florida.
Florida finally has a winner in the race for president. The Tampa Bay Times is reporting that President Barack Obama won all 29 electoral votes in the state of Florida. According to the Tampa Bay Times, Obama had 50.01 percent of the vote in Florida to Gov. Mitt Romney's 49.13 percent. According to the Florida Department of Sttate, Obama collected 4,236,032 votes to Romney's 4,162,174.
