Brewing has begun at one of the beaches' newest craft brewing companies.
The wine master behind The Florida Winery's award winning wines is tapping into his true passion: beer. Matthew Powers, of Largo, says The Florida Winery, at Johns Pass, is expanding and creating Mad Beach Craft Brew Company. Once the expansion is complete, guests will be able to sample everything from orange blossom honey to a passion fruit or coconut lager — or anything else they brew up. "We go against the tradition. There's no rules, we just do it the way we want," Powers said. Powers, the brewmaster, is brewing test batches, which can't be sold just yet. March bed tax collections set a single-month Pinellas County record with $4.96 million.
March 2013 was the most successful month for bed tax collection in Pinellas County ever, according to the Pinellas County Tourism Development Council. Pinellas set an all-time record for a single month with $4.96 million from bed taxes. That figure represents a 10 percent year-over-year increase from March 2012. "Strong visitation from Chicago/Midwest and the greater NYC led the way, as did a surprising uptick in European visitors, which was attributed to the success of direct air service between Tampa and Zurich via Edelweiss Air, now in its second year," the TDC's monthly report said. The jobless rate in Pinellas County dropped slightly in April, beating the overall unemployment rate in Tampa Bay and Florida, the Tampa Bay Times reports. The overall jobless rate across Tampa Bay – including Pinellas, Hillsborough, Pasco, Citrus and Hernando Counties – decreased from 6.9 to 6.7 percent, according to the Tampa Bay Times, quoting figures from the state Department of Economic Opportunity.
