St. Pete Beach Police Teach Bike Safety

The St. Pete Beach Police Department will be going over bicycle safety to children on beaches.

Biking is a popular activity amoung the youth in all communities. With summer here, kids may need to be brush up on their bike safety rules before hitting the trails.

St. Pete Beach Police is here to help with their first bike safety rodeo, an event based around learning the bike rules of the road in fun way.

On June 23rd from 8 a.m. to 11 a.m. at the St. Pete Beach Community Center, kids will get to learn about how to safely ride their bikes during the summer season.

Children must be accompanied by an adult and there'll be games and prizes throughout the event.

Why is this just for kids? Why can't they hold an event like this for all ages. Obviousy, there will be some different advice and many things related to the needs of adults compared to children. We are new to this area. We moved here from the midwest, where bicycle riding is no where near as prevalent. Since being here, we have quickly learned that there are many things to learnd not only from the viewpoint as an adult rider, but also as a car driver on the streets, in regard to bicyclists. I can't tell you how hard it has been to get used to just how many bicycle riders there are here. They seem to come from out of nowhere sometimes. It 's no wonder that in the metro area, that it seems either a pedestrian or bicyclists is killed virtually daily. I'd love to attend some seminars to give me and my family some tips..but we have little interest in going to a learning event geared towards children. It seems to me, that it is not the children riders that are the problems here..it is the adult riders. I'd like to learn the ''rules of the road'' the correct way so we can be good citizen riders and ride properly. There are many things concerning bike riding here that are confusing on how to handle some situations.
