'Spring Breakers' to Debut in Venice
The Selena Gomez movie, filmed on St. Pete Beach, will compete in August at the Venice Film Festival.
Filmed on St. Pete Beach and in other beach cities on the southwest Florida coast, "Spring Breakers" will make its debut in another watery setting: Venice, Italy.
The new crime caper, featuring bikini clad starlets on scooters, will vie for top honors at the 69th Venice Film Festival, from Aug. 26-Sept. 8, according to Ace Showbiz.
"Spring Breakers" is scheduled for a 2013 U.S. film release, and stars Selena Gomez, Vanessa Hudgens and James Franco.
The moviemaking caused quite a stir in the Tampa Bay area, with streets scenes filmed along St. Pete Beach's Corey Avenue and a jail scene made in Gulfport. Filming also was done in Sarasota, and the young female stars were seen having a good time in St. Petersburg.
Although "Spring Breakers" does not have the naughty appeal of "Magic Mike," which featued a male stripper and was filmed in Tampa, it does feature some of Hollywood's more popular teenage starlets sleuthing beachside in their bikins, with at least one topless scene featuring Tampa Bay extras, filmed in St. Pete Beach.
