Sheriff's Race: Candidates Weigh in on Drug Laws

This week on the Patch Podium, the candidates explain what role the sheriff's office should play in shaping legislation relating to prescription drugs and other forms of "legal highs."

Welcome to the Patch Podium, where candidates weigh in on the issues each week.

This week, we asked candidates for Pinellas County Sheriff:

What role should the Sheriff's Office have in shaping legislation related to prescription medication abuse and "legal highs" such as herbal incenses (i.e., K2, Spice and bath salts)?

Click on each candidate's name to read their response:

We're asking one more question before the sheriff's candidate debate on July 17 at the Unitarian Universalists of Clearwater Octagon Center, 2470 Nursery Road (6:30 p.m.).

Let us know what issue you'd like to hear about from the sheriff's candidates! You can either participate in the poll below to help us finalize our last question or suggest one of your own. We'll use your input to ask about issues you care about most.

The sheriff's candidate debate is free to attend, or you can watch Patch's live streaming coverage. It is sponsored by Patch, the National Armed Services & Law Enforcement Memorial Museum and Bay News 9.

The July 17th debate at the UUClearwater Octagon Arts Center next Tuesday at 7:00pm will be a real wake-up call for voters. It's the only real opportunity all qualified candidates have had to debate thus far. Honesty, integrity, experience, professionalism and knowledge of what's needed for the future of the agency are at the core of candidates' qualifications to lead the agency over the next four years. BN9, Al Reuchel, will ask tough questions about the personal and professional opinions and positions during the two-hour debate in front of over 300 (expected) voters. Perhaps the most important political race of the Pinellas County campaign season.
