RNC Opening Day Canceled Due to Storm Threat
Monday's opening of the Republican National Convention in Tampa has been canceled, officials said.
The first day of the Republican National Convention in Tampa on Monday has been wiped out by the threat of Tropical Storm Isaac, the Tampa Bay Times reports.
Officials announced the opening day's cancellation during a conference call Saturday, the Times reports.
The newspaper posted the following statement from Republican National Committee Chairman Reince Priebus on its website:
"Due to the severe weather reports for the Tampa Bay area, the Republican National Convention will convene on Monday August 27th and immediately recess until Tuesday afternoon, August 28th. After consulting with Governor (Rick) Scott, NOAA and local emergency management officials, we are optimistic that we will begin an exciting, robust convention that will nominate the Romney-Ryan ticket."
There was no immediate word on a revised schedule for the convention, which runs through Thursday in downtown Tampa.
A welcome party planned for Sunday night at Tropicana Field is still on as scheduled, St. Petersburg Mayor Bill Foster said Saturday afternoon.

I'm not a religious person by nature. But, there may in fact be a God!
Do we really want to trust a party to lead this country, that thinks having a convention in Florida in August sounds like a good idea? It makes about as much sense as their trickle down economics, deregulation of the country's biggest polluters and banks, and closing down women's health clinics.
Come to think of it, I'm pretty sure there is a God. And thank "him", he's a Democrat...

For Viki Watson:
Madam, by what divine right do you get to tell someone else that they "do not believe in God."? What colossal arrogance, and total ignorance!
I would more easily project that someone displaying a total disdain for Jesus' Sermon on the Mount, and for their disregard for the Parable of the Good Samaritan, reflects someone totally devoid of Christianity.
Yet, I would have to admit that even they - as we have all seen displayed by comments by some of the radical right posters on Patch threads - might believe in God, just not God as revealed by Jesus Christ.
Be very careful when you are tempted to deny that someone else believes in God, unless they have personally stated that as a fact.

Rollo, the terminology you use to differentiate between the Republicans and the "leftists" is interesting and perhaps enlightening in that the Republicans are here to nominate Willard Mitt Romney as their candidate for President. You say the Republicans are "stout of heart and have a backbone." Do they? You also say the "leftists will cut and run because they are... cowards." Let me take you back to the late 1960s. From 1968 to 1970, I was an Army infantryman in Vietnam - no one to blame but myself (I volunteered). Where was Willard Mitt Romney back in those days? I never saw him in Vietnam. I wonder why. Oh, that's right. He wasn't in Vietnam; he was in France on a "mission" for his "church." Now he wants to be President and lead us into war with Iran. It never ceases to amaze me how much braver are men in their 60s than are men in their late teens.

Whether Democrat, Republican, Liberterian, Christian, Islamist, Atheist, etc., what does any of this have to do with cancelling an event due to a potentially catastrophic weather event. At least we had a leader that made a decision. That is a start. As for my political views, we need to get rid of the two party system. We need one 6 year term for the president and the same for all elected officials. Screw the career politicians. I hope you all work it out.

We have term limits in Florida. I'm not sure I like the way it's turning out.
The real issue is that we elect people who will "fight" when they get to Washington. People who won't back down. People who know deep down that they are right and have the backing of their constituencies. They march into Washington, make promises to the country, and then promptly discover that the one skill a politician really needs--compromise--they don't have. Rather than straighten things out, they become a road block to progress.
Term limits aren't going to fix anything; they're just going to make sure we rotate the road blocks out faster. The solution is for us, the electorate, to vote for people who will compromise and negotiate and get the best deal possible.

Hell, you can walk out your front door and get hit by a car or get out of bed and fall and break your hip. However, sometimes you have to throw caution to the wind and be positive and think positive!
The people of Florida are not stupid when it comes to hurricanes. We have been dealing with them for years and making plans this time of year is no riskier than others. Not the exact quote but close enough to make my point: "Those who forge their guns into plows will surely plow for those who do not" :)

Bulldog,
I believe in the right to bear arms. My problem, I beleive it is too easy to earn a weapon. I believe that you had to diminstrate the ability to use the weapon properly. Classes or Tests even, because too many people believe in purchasing their weapon without learning how to use and maintain that weapon. We have classes and tests for driving cars which is more deadly to the average citizen, why not guns? Also there should be an appropriate background, including mental health check as well.

I have no problem w/ people owning guns. I have a problem with people using them on people that look or speak differently. Im guessing the majority of the minute men sitting on the border guns in hand have an R somewhere on their new voter id card. Those who believe our president is not an American (even though his mother was) probably have something in their nightstand thats loaded (and not w/batteries

Wow! These comments go from GOD bringing bad weather to show us that he is against the RNC to guns?? First of all, if GOD had anything to do with weather, don't you think there would be less catastrophes? As far as gun laws are concerned~ of course there should be strict laws in place for obtaining a deadly weapon BUT do you really think it will stop the wackadoodles? What about stabbings, should we ban knives? What about those that strangle others, ban all ropes and cords? Last, but not least, rape? Should we ban... I think you understand! What we need to do is have laws that are strict and start holding the wackadoodles accountable and stop making innocent people pay the price for the crazies!! Now, back to the post... I think calls were made way too soon, schools closed and the RNC cancelled opening day~ we've had worse weather with our typical florida rain storms but I guess better safe than sorry!

I'm not sure your assumption that GOD would create fewer catastrophes or even less catastrophic catastrophes is correct. The GOD in the Thumper Manual is actually quite adept and quite willing to kill lots of people for violations of his rules, especially his 10 Special Rules.
On your other point, have you ever tried to hold a wackadoodle accountable? It is akin to herding cats or nailing jello to the wall, especially when the wackadoodles are already armed to the teeth.

I hope you never need a gun or fail to qualify in some bureaucrats opinion, to be allowed to own one thereby not be able to save your own, or a loved ones life, or defend your freedoms. Maybe you can just hide. There are sheep (the usual victims), sheepdogs (those ready to defend), and wolves (bad people), sheep are unable and/or unwilling to be violent, sheepdogs are willing to fight, wolves and governments really like sheep :)

Bulldog,
So in your world anyone regardless of history or knowledge about a weapon deserves one. Some of us were lucky enough to be taught how to handle a firearm as children/youth. But there are a lot of people who have not clue. I would say in most cases that is just "natural" selection. I do not believe that no one should be allow to have arms. It goes against the very nature of our country, and would kill the industry I'm in.
I do believe in proper firearm training. A local gun range should be able to give the classes nesscary to properly use the firearm. Through I do believe it would end up being a beurcratic box check moment, it should be just mantained by people who know.
As far as the "wasn't able to protect my home" agrument. Bad agrument, more people shoot themselves then the intruder (goes back to proper training). 2/3 of home shootings are people shooting themselves on accident (again a stat my industry is quite aware of). But the NRA will push this message even through they know it's a bad agrument, because of the sheep that will follow it. Instead of the hundreds of other great agruments they put forth through bills/legal agruments on the right to bear arms.

This is unreal! The Democratic National Committee has chose to proceed with hosting Islamic “Jumah” prayers for two hours on the Friday of its convention, though it denied a Catholic cardinal’s request to say a prayer at the same event. Go ahead sheep follow your leader Obama and we can all whisper to our grandchildren what freedom was like.

I completely agree that all the major news sources are pushing the party or agenda they are putting their money to. There are news sources that are not proganda based, and the ultimate source. Public records. If you do your own research you can make an informed decsion. But when so many try to prove an agrument by a non-factual source, you must call the agrument what it is: invalid.

Absolutely Any adult should be allowed a gun if they want one. Felons, wolves, and politicians have guns-no law will ever change that, so who would "training requirements and restrictive laws" impare? Protecting yourself is a right not granted or to be denied bureaucrats. (I believe as of this week more innocent unarmed people are actually shot by NYC police than in home invasion self inflicted gun accidents).
The only thing I do not like about Obama is that he wants citizens unarmed, I just don't trust that", but I figure if it gets too pushy the American people will just have another revolution. Being armed makes us citizens - unarmed we are just subjects.
Firearms training is very inexpensive, FWC classes are actually free (hunter safety), training is readily availble to anyone over 14 years old. We have fantastic gun clubs, junior shooting programs, women only classes, competitions, and many shops right here in Pinellas that are happy to train or direct anyone that asks.
So if an idiot, or thousands of idiots, with guns do not get any firearms training and subsequently shoot themselves the rest of the people that want a gun must now go through "required" training and or licensing? Stupid reasoning like that is why we have idiotic warning labels on everything... Maybe all that is needed is a label on guns that says "Do not point at yourself or anyone- Especially when finger is on the trigger".
We can not idiot proof the world, Michael, its totally impossibe :)

I believe Obama has voted anti-gun enough times to show his true colors, and don't forget the fast and furious folly he tried to put over on America. But I'm still voting for him because this is only one of many important issues and I feel he is still best for America right now.
I think what the anti-gun politicians like Pelosi, Feinstien, Bloomberg etc, want to do is to narrowly define what a hunting weapon is and ultimately control what type of firearms we can own, their range and ammo capacities. They clearly want to outlaw pistols and high capasity firearms and most have implied, including Obama, that they do not personally believe the second amendment gives an individual right to keep and bear arms.
Our goverment has pumped billions into arming and militarizing local police departments with assault vehicles, automatic weapons, chemical and sound weapons, they have passed laws that userp our Constitution and Bill of Rights (patriot act), and have made it legal to detain any American Citizens indefinately without charges. There is surely something more afoot than protecting us from ourselves :)

I don't know very many people in any party who advocate for removing all guns from citizens. I doubt very much that President Obama is one of those people. Campaigning for restrictions on fully automatic weapons like assault rifles, waiting periods, and background checks is not "anti-gun." I don't own a weapon right now, but I ranked "expert marksman" in the military and I'm comfortable with people owning guns.
The gun controversy is just a political creation to build a false view of Republicans being noticeably different than Democrats on the right to own weapons. In reality, the difference is minor, mostly revolving around the types and scope of licensing/registration required before you can own one.
Religion, Guns, LGBT Rights, Border Patrol, Abortion -- all manufactured controversy. The vast majority of Americans agree on the core of all of these and only find disagreement on the minor details.
It depresses me to see people argue these things like they're really critical or in danger of slipping. The only risk to them is politicians using them to fire up the faithful and use fear to get elected.
Do you know what I learned after 26 years as an openly gay man? My partner and I will be able to get married and be recognized by the Federal government in our lifetime no matter what anyone else does or says. It's going to happen. And you know what? The majority of Americans don't mind one bit--they're focused on more important things.

For the benefit of the liars from the radical right, here's the TRUTH about Cardinal Dolan:
Dolan To Pray At Democratic National Convention
Clergy Member Also To Give Closing Benediction At RNC
By Eric MarrapodiCNN Belief Blog Co-Editor
POSTED: 11:52 am EDT August 28, 2012
UPDATED: 4:42 pm EDT August 28, 2012
(CNN) -- Cardinal Timothy Dolan has accepted an invitation to give the closing prayer at the Democratic National Convention in Charlotte, N.C., next week, which will also feature a nun in a speaking role.
Dolan, the archbishop of New York and president of the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops, also will give the closing benediction at the Republican National Convention in Tampa, Fla., on Thursday.
When he accepted that invitation, Dolan said his appearance would be prayerful, not political, a sentiment reiterated by his spokesman in announcing his appearance at the DNC.
"It was made clear to the Democratic Convention organizers, as it was to the Republicans, that the Cardinal was coming solely as a pastor, only to pray, not to endorse any party, platform, or candidate," cardinal spokesman Joseph Zwilling said.

In fairness, the offer and acceptance came after the controversy, as a response to it. I'm cure the Cardinal, even as vocally critical of Obama has he has been, didn't mean to pull his church into the spotlight; this is just his way of making it a non-issue. And good for him.
The real issue here is that the Cardinal's spokesperson was defending accusations that the Catholic Church was taking sides in the election by saying that the Cardinal was acting in a non-partisan role and would have just as easily accepted a request from the DNC. But folks on the right picked that up and spread a false story that the Cardinal had offered and was rejected as a means to feed the fear of the religious right and confirm their feelings of victimization. It was nothing but a big dog and pony show; I hope the folks that fell for it feel stupid and regret their reactions--that would be the normal, adult response.

As a devoted athiest, (Athiest: one who realizes the little voice in his head is not "god" speaking), I don't grasp how anyone who professes to be intelligent would believe in imaginary, invisible beings, or a dead person. Nor can I grasp why all religious groups are infatuated with penises. Why would anyone just believe when someone says: "god spoke to me last night, he said: "give me 10% of your earnings", "Mary is a pregnant virgin", "drop your pants let me see your penis", "don't tell your parents", and "don't forget to wear your magic under wear"?
However from history we see that Constantine, (a nutty Turk on a quest to dominate the world), had his minions create the bible and thus began modern christianity which is responsible for such fun stuff as the crusades, the inquisition, witch hunts, world wars, slave trade, and child molestation, all in gods name of course. If I have embarrassed any religious individual or group, sorry but reflections are sometimes harsh but always truthful, forgive me:). As to why religion and man made god subsidiaries get a free ride on income and property taxes, its simple payback! See, most politicians really like having their penises at the forefront, (especially republicans), and then add the fact that the churches feed the irrational fear of man-made gods to the masses and that fear keeps the people from eating the politicians :)

Imagine...this thread all began with a simple article on the RNC Opening Day being canceled. This is a perfect example of what this country is all about~ everyone having the right to have their own beliefs and views. Religious buildings and land are tax exempt and have been since the beginning of time. HOWEVER, there is a belief that pulled the wool over the eyes of our (what I thought was an intelligent) government. A belief that is similar to a magician pulling a rabbit out of a hat or Harry Potter flying on a broom, something you may get combining witchery with astrology. A group of people with the same beliefs does not justify it as a religion, especially when people of other denominations are RESTRICTED. I don't know how SCIENTOLOGY became an approved religion, exempt to paying taxes?? Freedom of beliefs and views is one thing, a group of wolves calling themselves sheep is another! With that being said, when do we draw the line between what our founding fathers believed and the state of craziness that our country has become??
