Enthusiastic Supporters Greet Paul Ryan in Oldsmar

The Vice-Presidential nominee attacked President Obama's economic policy during the rally.

Vice presidential nominee Rep. Paul Ryan took the stage around noon on Saturday to a roaring applause with the backdrop of a tranquil Tampa Bay behind him.

The rally in Oldsmar’s R. E. Olds Park was among the campaign's recent push in the battleground state of Florida. Ann Romney appeared in Largo last week. President Barack Obama will be in the Tampa area next week.

Ryan came out strong, wasting no time highlighting what he called President Barack Obama’s failed economic plan. “We don’t need sugar high economics, we need economic growth,” Ryan said to the crowd.

He told the crowd the election would chose what kind of country they would have and what kind of people they would become. “And the question is 'do we want four more year of the same?'" Ryan said.

“Do we want to go down the path of debt and decline or do we want to snap out of it and get this country back on track by electing Mitt Romney the next President of the United States?” he added.

Ryan’s comments were preceded by a "Who’s Who" of the Florida Republican Party, including Congressman Bill Young, former St. Petersburg Mayor Rick Baker, Congressman Gus Bilirakis and Attorney General Pam Bondi.

The speakers emphasized the importance of Tampa Bay’s voice in the election. Early voting begins in 17 days.

"We’re going to win Florida because of all you right here today," Bondi told the roaring crowd calling Ryan "a man of great integrity and intelligence."

"Not only does he understand the jobs and economy..." Bondi said. "But he understands our budget."

The budget is what brought out spectators like Kevin Hanson, a married father of three with one on the way.

Hanson, a Westchase resident, said he has been following Ryan for a year on Facebook.

"I understand what the budget is all about and how our entitlement spending has skyrocketed, we need to reign that in,” said Hanson, a federal government employee.

“I’m not saying entitlements are bad some are needed but spend that money wisely, manage it wisely so we can afford a better America,” he said.

Ryan spent much of his time on stage speaking close to the heart of retirees highlighting what he considered flaws in Obamacare.

“You plan your retirement based on your income,” Ryan said. “You have a budget and it’s based on dollars and when they undermine the value of our dollar it wipes out our standard of living.”

"Medicare should not be used as a piggy bank for Obamacare," said Ryan, whose mother Betty was in attendance. "People like my mom organized their retirement based on their income.”

Rally-goer Diane Gale, 59, echoed Ryan's sentiments.

"I think they (Romney/Ryan) have my well being at heart as a disabled person," said Gale, a Palm Harbor resident. "Obama care is just disastrous."

Kurt Irmischer, 72, of Clearwater agreed.

"I believe that this is the most important election in my lifetime," Irmischer said. "Obama's policies have failed us miserably... Internationally, his soft love policies are coming back to haunt us."

Ryan used his time on stage to assure the crowd his ticket had a plan for America touting Mitt Romey's business acumen and his understanding of the budget.

"Look what the man has done in business," he said about Romney. "(He's) created tens of thousands of jobs and started successful businesses we all know today."

Ryan said the duo have a plan for economy and job growth and would work to remedy the country's reliance on foreign oil.

"We've got energy in this country let’s use this energy in this country... coal, gas, renewable, all of the above," he said.

Both Ryan and Romney's families were highlighted during the rally. Large video screens played a montage of Romney and his wife Ann talking about their years together. Ryan approached the stage with his wife, Janna.

Dunedin resident Germaine Bolanos said it's those family values that drew her to the Republican party.

As a Latino she said the group's values align more with the Republican Party despite public opinion.

“I don’t think Latins are the minority (in the Republican party,) I think the Democrats are playing it that way,” said Bolanos, 33, who works in human resources.

“When you think about the Latin community’s values… working hard, family, religion, they align with Republicans,” said Bolanos who is married with two children. “Not this party where everything goes.”

Spectators like Vicki Angerame, 30 and Lindsey Johnson, 26, both teachers from Sarasota braved the heat and the lack of shade to put actions behind their words.

“As young women we feel it’s really important for us to be here,” said Angerame. “It’s about responsibility, being responsible for yourself and family values. "We try to always instill those values in our kids.”

Duty. Honor. Country. Service. Those were words Ryan used to describe his running mate before painting a narrative of America with words from the Declaration of Independence.

"Lets never forget America is an idea, it’s the only country founded on an idea," Ryan said. "Our rights are from nature and nature's God, not government."

"Floridians, we can do this," he added. "With your help, together we can do this."

Where do Republicans get off thinking Democrats are opposed to working hard? I put myself through college working full-time and caring for my son at the same time. I paid off my student loans. I volunteer in the community. I'm most definitely a democrat and I've sick of Republicans accusing us of being lazy and wanting handouts.
HOW RUDE!

It sounds like you're really a Republican than man. Hate to point out the obvious. That's why we went to the rally, ya know. You should have come to see what he had to say. Why are you wanting to vote for 4 more years of what we just went through, and wanting to be associated with a side that you don't like?

Well Republicans think that Dem leaders pander to those who are lazy in order to get their votes while Dems think that Republicans pander to those with the biggest checkbooks, who they can cut taxes for, help to not pay their fair share and Ryan more than likely doesn't give a rat's butt about those few hundred people who went out to "support" him. No seniors in the crowd, no african americans, no gays, no latinos. Hmmmmmm Just a bunch of well off WASPS. I mean Ryan is as clueless as Romney when it comes to working hard or what that's all about.

The bottom line Grace is... DO YOU WANT MORE GOVERNMENT CONTROLLING YOUR LIFE! What is it that many Obama supporters don't get? The government wants to now control our healthcare, bring on more taxes to pay for others, and set more regulations on business.Business is our engine in this free capitalistic country. It seems that many people cry out for more help from the government and Obama. Obama has an open checkbook it seems... like 6TRILLION MORE! Paul Ryan is one of the smartest economic planners around. He has a plan. If people don't start taking responsiblity for their own lives, our free country will no longer be FREE. THIS ADMINISTRATION HAD THEIR CHANCE AND STILL HAD NO BUDGET IN 3YEARS. wHAT A DISGRACE! JS

Do you think gays wear signs? Anyone that is gay looks like any other American. And, I bet you weren't there anyway so you would never know. Turn off MSNBC and see the light.

Very positive article about Rep Ryan, although it does not mention the number of people who "braved the heat and no shade" like the two teachers from Sarasota (who apparently teach a course called Family Values) so I do wonder where the "hundreds" in the headline came from. Even more impressive, Patch reporters found people from every targeted demographic in the crowd who could comment positively on each part of the Romney/Ryan platform: female senior citiizens, Latinas, young women, old men, etc. Impressive. Doesn't make me want to support Rep Ryan because his budget damages both Medicare and Medicaid while his running mate's foreign policy skills (or lack thereof) guarantees the United States will enter more unfunded wars. And none of Gov. Romney's five healthy sons will fight in those wars.. . .

Sarasota teacher who "braved the heat"

3:11 pm on Sunday, September 16, 2012

Unfortunately Lynda, we do have to teach courses in "Family Values" to our students, as our children in this country are not receiving such values in their own homes in many cases. Check your statistics of those coming from homes without "family values" involved in our legal system. Our job is to mold the whole child to be successful in their careers. Yes careers, not working at your local Starbucks. Without such life skills, we are setting their and our future up for failure. Furthermore, it wasn't difficult to find spectators from all backgrounds as every background (gender, race, financial background, etc) was represented over and over again by the THOUSANDS, not hundreds, of people that were there. Unless you were there to know the events of the day, and unless you become an educated part of our society yourself, keep comments in your disillusioned mind. Fact is fact and is freedom is not free. Thank GOD we have someone running for office who understands that this is the case, unlike your present day president. Pay attention to the world around you. It isn't flowers, rainbows, and never ending supplies of kool-aid!

Sarasota Teacher. I taught in 'disadvantaged" schools early in my career; I do understand your concern about the children you teach. You are lucky your school district allows you to teach any values, much less "Family values". Conservative (self-described) groups prevented my social studies classes from discussing current subjects because "those topics are the responsibility of the parents", (especially those parents who never showed up to conferences!) I appreciate your eye witness account about who attended this rally, too, although like the earlier commenter, I wonder what you saw that told you someone's financial background! Yes, my mind is disillusioned by those who support two men whose policies will damage a country I love. Like Madeline Allbright, I can't imagine any woman supporting policies that restrict women's health care and equal pay. I am also surprised someone who prizes freedom and facts is supporting the Romney/Ryan ticket, two things missing from their campaign. Your last sentences do make me question the openness of your thought processes, Those of us who support President Obama aren't thinking of "flowers, rainbows, etc." We are thinking of our veterans who deserve care when they come home, our children who deserve healthy communities and our seniors who worked hard for their Medicare and don't need it changed. One thing I learned when I was teaching which could help you: People who love learning never stop accepting new ideas. Try it sometime.

There are plenty of people in this world who hate is for being us, We should not to tear each other apart over politics when there are so many in the world who would relish the site of a divided America. News flash for all of you who think your better off now, I guess Dunedin itself is not better off than it was 4 years ago!
http://www.tampabay.com/news/localgovernment/some-jobs-lost-some-added-under-dunedins-2013-budget/1251663
"Under the proposed budget, 10 staff positions would be cut through attrition, reorganization or elimination of vacant positions, and five workers would be laid off.

The city would add three full-timers (a parks service worker, a civilian fire inspector and an administrative assistant who would "float" among the clerk's, city manager's and parks offices) and five part-time positions (all at the library).

Officials say the move would save about $320,000 annually and bring the city's total number of employees to 338, down from 339 last year and a high of 401 six years ago.

The city would pull $163,000 from its general fund for employee raises. The proposal also contains $10,000 for salary increases for employees who, during upcoming job audits, are found to have taken on extensive extra duties.

Thursday's vote on the raises and layoffs was final because the employee pay plan is not based on an ordinance, which would require two separate votes.

"Our sorrow to those folks who did lose their jobs here," Mayor Dave Eggers said. "A big thank you for all the hours and years they gave.""

Romney=Obama. If he had a D beside his name, the Left would be loving him.....and other than a few areas, Obama=Bush. I'm not sure why the Right isn't loving the 3rd consecutive term of this BS.

For you those who've lived longer than few decades, what the hell is wrong with you to still buy into the Left/Right world? Seriously? None of these people care about us......Gus for us?? Really? Have you seen how he votes? Heck, have you seen how any of these people vote? I understand he often acts as a Dictator, but who do you think is voting on these Bills for Obama to sign?? There's to much freaking Bi-partisanship in the District of Criminals.

So it's either....."FORWARD...............over the cliff"
or "BELIEVE IN AMERICA...........that doesn't truly include WE the people"

People seriously need to awaken before it's to late and it becomes impossible to make the changes we need in this world.

Here is the policy that as a provider of health care I advocate. SImply adding Medicare as an option to the Affordable Care Act available to ALL Americans irrespective of their age. Such an option as I envision it, will enable virtually ALL Americans to have access to affordable comprehensive health care. Sherri at the Patch encouraged me to contribute commentary. I hope that my participation will encourage positive discussion in the community.

I am BTW challenging Mr. Bilirakis for the District 12 Congressional seat. The link below takes you to a detailed description of my plan. Sheldon Adelson, Romney's uber-billionaire casino owner and financial backer, pledged to give Romney $100 million -- or "whatever it takes" -- to defeat Obama.

Do you know why???

As Bill Clinton reminded us, sometimes the answer is as simple as arithmetic. So let's do the math:

According to a new report from the Center for American Progress Action Fund, Adelson will get $2 billion in tax savings from Romney in return for his support. And it will be paid for by every taxpayer reading this blog, so pass the word QUICKLY.

If Obama wins, everyone pays their fair share of taxes...including Mr. Adelson!

Tell me...
WHICH ONE IS MORE FAIR FOR AMERICAN FAMILIES?
WHICH ONE CAN YOU AFFORD?

Americans cannot afford to live the Romney-Ryan lifestyle without having the same personal wealth.

We can DREAM...but we know that it's not reality. Romney is still dreaming.

They both say a lot of nothing too. More importantly, the president really doesn't have a lot of power as we've seen over the past 4 years. It's the congress that will either make laws or let things go by the wayside. Eric Cantor said on Friday that Congress will be in recess until November 13th. How convenient. 2 months of vacation with all the bills sitting before them and people suffering. They're all a bunch of cowards and all need to go. The way the process works is that we get to select the politicians (Obama vs Romney) and those who bankroll the politicians will select the policies that will be followed during the term of office. I guess Joseph Robert is oblivious to reality as well.......do you not see what's occurring over there right now? Afghan troops being trained by Americans are turning their guns on them.......embassies are being attacked......ambassadors killed........Christians being slaughtered and driven from areas they have lived for 2,000 years. If the ever increasing anti-American vitriol is an achievement, I'd hate to see what you deem a failure.

Ended the War in Iraq? Hmm, that's great, so all those troops get to come home to their families, right? Nah, wrong......they are simply relocated to Afghanistan. Amazing, a person opens a door, sends the troops through it and the brain dead sheeple believe the war has come to an end.
By the way, just two months ago, Iraq experienced it's most deadly day in over 2 years when more than 100 were killed.......people are still being killed every single day. I guess Obama and Bush can claim "MISSION ACCOMPLISHED"

I want you to tell the family members of these dead human beings that Obama is doing a good job with the foreign entanglements.

Simply scroll down the list and notice how the fatalities dramatically decrease..........if the increasing of American deaths in these UNjust and UNconstitutional wars is an achievement, we have truly entered the bizarro world.

SC, please remember why there are American troops in Afghanistan: to attack the training camps of those who killed nearly 3,000 people on 9/11. Please remember why there were combat troops in Iraq: President Bush II wanted to go to war with Iraq. If Afghanistan had been a priority while the world still supported the US after 9/11 before the war of choice in Iraq, we would not still be at war with troops in danger. The neocons supporting the Romney/Ryan ticket want us to be at war with Iran and stay longer in Afghanistan. Cheney, Rumsfeld, Senor all want more wars and all support the RomneyRyan ticket. President Obama has been able to manage the complexities of international relationships without starting new wars and has reduced the number of American troops in danger in Iraq. Yes, ask those family members which party platform supports care for their wounded warriors, which candidate honors the dead with actions not just words, which candidate works to prevent more foreign wars. People of my age are angry that Gov. Romney supported the Vietnam war and was not willing to fight in it. We continue to be angry that he and the rest of his advisors who have never been willing to fight will so easily talk big about sending our children and grandchildren (never theirs) to fight their wars of choice for them.

Some very salient points that you make there Mr. Clemens.

So when did Mr. Obama actually raise a fist or a gun? I've yet to see him kill anything.......other than the Hope and Change he promised. Heck, those of us residing in reality are still patiently awaiting the unveiling of the TIM OSMAN......err, I mean Osama Bin Laden corpse.

I'm curious, did you applaud when the tough guy Obama killed an innocent 16 year old AMERICAN CITIZEN and his cousin, via a drone strike? Or like most brain dead Americans, do you no longer believe in the Law of the Land........trial by jury?
Do you really want a dictator in DC with a kill list??????????????

Why are you reveling in the death and destruction of others? You and I are no different than the people who are slaughtered in these foreign invasions and occupations..............that is who suffer the most, people like you and I......people who just want to enjoy their families, their lives, the beautiful world we've been given. Instead, we have nutjobs convincing the masses to get behind the genocides. Good ole Edward Bernays has done a fine job on the American public.

Hmmm, the Arab Spring? You mean the orchestrated events to overthrow the installed puppets to install the new puppets, The Muslim Brotherhood??

The one where they invaded Libya due to Gadhafi starting to sell oil for Gold, instead of dollar$$$$?
The one that has lead to the deaths of the Black Africans in Libya?
The one that has caused an Exodus of Christians from lands they have resided for 2,000 years.
The one that will lead to the new regimes being more aligned than before?
The one that will lead to Sharia law being the law of all those lands?
FYI: Most of the leaders over there have created a world where the Muslims, Jews and Christians can live somewhat peacefully........................this will no longer be the case. Simply take a look at Iraq for this evidence.

God forbid Americans actually do some research into what is truly going on in the world. I do not claim to know everything, but I do realize there is a narrative provided to the American people that doesn't jive with reality............but hey, we live in a world where they can tell us 2 planes bring down 3 buildings in New York and the boogie man is dead, but don't you worry about seeing the corpse, simply trust the overlords.......they care so much about us.

THE WORLD IS DANGEROUS BECAUSE OF THE INVOLVEMENT OF AMERICAN TROOPS PROTECTING CORPORATE INTERESTS AROUND THE WORLD.

J Swartz. The government hasn't been controlling my life for the past 4 years and I'd love to know how it's controlling yours. Government has been controlling parts of our life since W was elected unless you have forgotten that. And why would I vote for people who really would control our lives. OK not mine because I am too old to have kids, and I don't believe in abortion but it's not government's place to tell a woman what to do with her body. And if gays want to get married, doesn't effet me and if it effects you, then you need to mind your own business. And I sure as heck don't want billionaires controlling my life, while working people pay more taxes than they do, and they get the breaks and don't create jobs. I'd take 4 more years of what we have vs. the 8 years we had before. 2 wars we didn't pay for, the economy going down the tubes, and America being the laughing stock of the world. Yup I'll take 4 more years. The Republican Party of the past is so far removed from the one that exists today that it's not even the same party. As for an enthusiastic crowd welcoming Ryan, 400-500 people I wouldn't call much of a crowd! And if you want a President who believes that it's better to keep your money offshore, who doesn't pay taxes and who believes that when he dies he will become a God with his own planet, then J. I suggest you lay off the beer. Do you even know a thing about Romney's religion?

Did anyone get a count on the total number of lies that Ryan told in Oldsmar?

I understand he was aiming for his personal-best number?
