Update: Courtney Campbell, North Howard Frankland Lanes Closed Due to Debby

High surf and swells are causing problems for motorists in Pinellas and Hillsborough counties.

Update, 8:39 a.m. Tuesday:

The Howard Frankland Bridge and Courtney Campbell Causeway were open to traffic Tuesday morning, the FHP said.

The Sunshine Skyway Bridge remained closed.

Update, 8:41 p.m.:

The Florida Highway Patrol has closed the Courtney Campbell Causeway in both directions and the northbound lanes of the Howard Frankland Bridge.

The southbound lanes of the Howard Frankland/Interstate 275 have been reopened, according to FHP spokesperson Sgt. Steve Gaskins, but there is water on much of the northbound lanes.

The Gandy Bridge remains open.

"There is no definite timeline for re-opening roadways," Gaskins said in a media release. "As weather and roadway conditions improve, roadways will re-open."

Stay with Patch for updates as they become available.

Hi Mr. Drummer, that's straight from Sgt. Steve Gaskins, the spokesman for the Florida Highway Patrol. We'll post an update as soon as there is word on it reopening.

Since you sent this as a breaking news alert on Tuesday morning (3:35 am) you might want to update the story. All bridges except the skyway have been reopened.

I always thought it was the Howard Franklin Bridge..... so I Googled it....
the name of this bridge comes up both ways, Howard Franklin and Howard Frankland, even in Maps! So which is correct?
Thank you, Patch, for keeping us up to date on conditions!

Heike, it's Frankland. Named for Tampa Businessman Howard Frankland. It's actually on a sign on the bridge as you head south from Tampa to St. Pete. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Howard_Frankland_Bridge

@Sherri, it's cool. I just know that I check patch before heading out on my 7 minute commute into downtown St. Pete. I wouldn't want others who have a longer commute to be confused. :)
