Should St. Pete Beach Get Rid of Its Police Department?
We want to hear your opinion on the possible dissolution of the St. Pete Beach Police and an idea to contract with the Pinellas County Sheriff's Office,
Currently, St. Pete Beach is on track for a $1.25 million budget gap next year, and the switch to contracting the sheriff's office would save $1.35 million.
The final decision will come down to a vote and the city commission is working on putting the issue on the next ballot.
Do you think that using the Sheriff's Office in St. Pete Beach is the answer for saving money, or do you think it's a bad idea to get rid of local law enforcement?
Let us know in the comments about how you feel.

Beach police have notoriously been "full of themselves". Maybe this was a way of posturing and showing just how important and needed they are.

No opinion other than it seems there is too much attention to issuing petty traffic violations.

I don't know about the St Pete Beach Police as I have no experience with them. To me that signals a good thing, policing in moderation against non-criminals (meaning normal citizens going about their daily lives) I do know several of the Pinellas County Sheriff's and they are for the most part a currupt bunch of egomaniacs. In addition, they create their own money making machine at your expense. They increase the need for more officer's and cars so that they can pull over and harrass more citizens to collect more rediculously inflated fines so that they can buy more patrol cars so they can pull over more people.... It's a never ending cycle and you can't drive a half a mile in Pinellas County without seeing several partol cars. But crime is still high, precription drugs are tampant and the Pinellas county sheriff's office is in the news every day for some other corrupt act. Do you want these rogue cops coming to your town too??

If the police department can do something about your homeless problem than I say keep funding them indefinitely, but that issue is more important than too many cops on the payroll, in my opinion. St.Pete is awash in the unwashed, stumbling, and mumbling everywhere and they are becoming a real blight on the very areas you're trying to market as fun, unique, and enjoyable to non-locals (like myself, I live OTB (over the bridge)), but along with the hassle of being stopped and panhandled for change is the very real danger of hitting one of these slower moving, drunk or methed out of their minds, crossing the streets anywhere at anytime...seriously, can't you do something about all of the vagrants in downtown St. Pete??

Yes. Visit their web site. There are no e-mail addresses. They prefer to use Coplogic reporting. What happened to the days of the cops on the beat where the police actually rubbed shoulders with the denizens they served. Time for them to go.
